Jim and Max have an intimate start to the new morning, and then go down to the pool for breakfast, where Glen is waiting with Faunus. They are joined by 'the 'Boss' who has his first revealing meeting with his new nephew.
And then the road trip continues...
It was a bright, clear sunny morning - just like it always was, day after day in Arizona.
Max, who had been sent to bed with one of Faunus' embarrassing hypnotic suggestions, was fast asleep, and would stay that way unless he received a gentle good morning kiss from Jim.
Faunus and Jim, dressed in their bathrobes, approached the door to Max's hotel room.
Faunus, who never had any problem with locked doors, stared at the lock, which obediently clicked.
"There, Jim.
Now just one kiss, and he will wake up.
And Max never wears any shorts or pyjamas in bed, so your task is simple."
Jim looked puzzled, and then realised how Faunus knew, and why he was telling Jim this odd piece of information.
Jim smiled.
"One kiss on the forehead - and he will awake, and he's yours.
But please - be gentle with him, and don't take too long, as we are having breakfast by the pool - and you will then have the opportunity of witnessing the first meeting of the 'Boss' and Glen - and I promise it will be interesting.", Faunus continued.
"And what about Glen - is he OK ?", Jim asked, wondering if Faunus had had enough time to sort out the 'newly minted' cousin.
"Bright as a pin!", Faunus replied confidently.
"You'll really love him...", and Faunus paused.
"In fact - I really do hope that you will love him..." Faunus added quietly.
"I'm sure I will... after all, you made him - so I think he will be easy to love.", Jim replied.
And Jim quietly walked into Max's room.
"There's something I need to talk to you about." Jim began.
"Yes, I was expecting this... 'the 'Boss' doesn't approve of 'you and me'.", Max said, with a note of resignation in his voice.
"No... that's not it at all !
In fact the 'Boss' purposefully put us together.
No, it's just that there's someone else.
Someone I knew long before I knew you - and someone who I think needs me.
And not just for sex - but for much more."
Max looked sad.
"Well that's OK... I can understand.", he replied, obviously upset, but seeming prepared for such an eventuality.
"Thanks Max.", Jim said feeling terribly awkward.
"Now this is difficult for me to say, and if you hate me for saying it, well... it can't be helped... but I'm just being honest.
Like 'Roger', I think your so 'cute', and the sex is really great - but for me that's enough - and I don't want us to really get involved any further, so if seeing each-other, when we're free, and carrying on with the great sex, is enough for you, then we can go on like that, even if we are involved with other guys... but if you don't like that, just say so." , Jim concluded, very awkwardly.
Max looked at Jim, and took his hand.
"You're a really nice, cute guy, Jim, and I'm always here if you ever want me, so just do your thing, and we can go on enjoying one another, regardless." Max said.
"Wow... really ?...
That's made me very happy !", Jim said, as he stepped out of the shower.
"But shouldn't we be getting dressed and going down to the pool to have breakfast with the 'Boss', and your new 'cousin' Glen ?", Max said, as he left the shower, and started drying himself.
Max was pleased to have sorted things, as he had been expecting some sort of problem from the first time they were intimate - and he hoped now that the matter was solved.
Jim, dressed in his fluffy white bathrobe, went back to his suite to put some clothes on, while Max fussed with his hair, put on his Speedos (as he would probably use the pool later), and dressed himself in jeans and a casual top.
Jim did the same in his suite.
Max, as usual, took a long time to get ready - wanting to look really 'cool' - so Jim had to go to Max's room to collect him.
They then both went down to the pool.
As they approached the pool, Jim thought it was time that he told Max about Glen.
"By the way, Max... my cousin has just arrived from Hampton, Virginia, and he's going to be staying with the 'Boss', and maybe me and the gang at the penthouse.
And I'd better warn you, he's been educated at a military academy - so he may be a bit formal.
Max nodded - but appeared not to be particularly interested.
Glen at the Pool |
Once at the pool they found Max, sitting at a table by the pool.
Jim was surprised to see that Glen had his shirt unbuttoned, and wondered if Faunus had 'screwed' up somewhere, as he had presumed that Glen would be prudish and neat, and not inclined to show off his chest in public.
"Hi guys !", Glen said, as soon as he caught sight of them.
'Looks like his memory's OK... but it's difficult to realize that he was 'Roger' just last night.' Jim thought, as he looked at the smiling young lad.
Jim waved.
"Hi Glen ! ... can we come and sit with you ?", Jim asked, not being sure just how friendly Glen might be.
"Of course !", Glen said, standing up very politely as they approached.
"What do we do if he salutes us ?", Max whispered.
"Shut up ! Max.", Jim replied, equally quietly.
Glen offered his hand.
"Are you my cousin Jim ?", Glen asked.
"Yes.", Jim replied.
"And you must be Glen."
"Yes...", Glen answered awkwardly.
"But we've never met before ?" Jim said, just to check.
"No... but I've heard a lot about you from our uncle." Glen replied - rather too enthusiastically for Jim's liking.
"Oh..", Jim replied cautiously, wondering what weird memories Faunus may have provided Glen with - particularly regarding 'tales about Jim'.
"So now we can be friends.", Glen said, rather naively.
"Well yes... of course.", Jim replied, wanting, at that moment, very much to be somewhere else.
Glen then gestured for them to sit down - so then Jim and Max were caught.
"This is Max... a good friend of mine.", Jim explained.
"Hi Max... have we met before ?", Glen said slowly, as if searching for a memory.
Max looked at Jim - very puzzled, and Jim, subtly shook his head - as if to say 'ignore it' - but Jim had a very uneasy feeling.
"No Glen... I live in Vegas, and I've been told that you come from Virginia, so I think it's unlikely.", Max replied nervously.
At that point, as Jim tried to look casually round the swimming pool, desperately trying to think of something sensible to say, he spotted 'the Boss' and Faunus, chatting on the other side of the pool.
"Look Glen, er... our er... uncle, with a business colleague.", Jim said - hoping that 'the Boss' or Faunus could get them out of their awkward situation.
Glen excitedly stood up and waved.
"Uncle Alex !... Over here !", Glen shouted, in that unrestrained way that young teenagers have.
Max and Jim looked at one another.
"Uncle who ?", Max mouthed to Jim, smiling at the same time.
"Oh yes... it's Uncle Alex.", Jim said, pretending that he knew all along that the 'Boss' was called 'Alex'.
Max started giggling.
"Shut up, Max !", Jim said quietly, as they watched 'the Boss' and Faunus make their way over to the table at which they were sitting.
"Now this is going to get complicated...", Max said quietly, as he watched Glen button up his shirt, and stand, almost to attention.
When 'the Boss' arrived at their table, Glen held out his hand in greeting, and Glen and the 'Boss' shook hands.
"Good morning, Sir.", Glen said in clipped, military tones.
"Good morning, Glen... I trust you had a good journey ?", the 'Boss' replied.
"Yes Sir, very good Sir, thank you Sir.", Glen answered.
'So that's the effect that a military academy has', Jim thought to himself.
"Good, and sit down.", the 'Boss' then said, not used to people being quite so polite and respectful.
At that point Jim felt he should set a good example, and stood.
"Good morning, Sir." Jim said.
"Good morning, Jim... and before you also get up, Max... Good morning.", the 'Boss' said brusquely.
"Now get me a chair !... and one for... er... Don Picaro.", the 'Boss' said - realizing that it might be difficult explaining Faunus' real name to Glen.
There was a confused scramble as Glen, Jim and Max all rushed to get chairs for the 'Boss' and Faunus.
Eventually the chairs were sorted out, everyone was seated, and a waiter, seeing that the 'Boss' had arrived, immediately came to the table to take orders for breakfast.
"So... we meet again...", 'the Boss', (or should it be 'Uncle Alex'), said hesitantly.
"Yes Sir." Glen replied, obviously nervous of being with his little known uncle, who was now his permanent guardian - at least that's how Faunus seemed to have arranged it.
There was a long, embarrassing silence, as neither 'Uncle Alex', or his nephew Glen, seemed to know what to say.
"I was sorry to hear about your parents.", the 'Boss' said gently - going along with the 'scenario' that Faunus had given him.
"Thank you Sir.", Glen said softly - obviously upset, and apparently near to tears.
Jim was amazed at the skill with which Faunus had programmed 'Glen' - having provided the 'boy' with not only memories, but also the appropriate emotional responses - but Jim wondered just how genuine the emotions were that Glen displayed.
Then, as he sat looking at the boy, he wondered about his own memories - and how genuine his memories and emotions were. - after all, they all also relied on the skills of Faunus.
"Yes... well boy... you've now got me... not that I could replace you mother and father - and you've got a new cousin, Jim, and Jim's friends... and there's even a wonderful new pet waiting for you at the Penthouse in Vegas.", the 'Boss' said, trying to be paternal, which was not at all easy for him, not having any children.
The pet, presumably was Glaux - not that Glaux would be happy being called a 'pet'.
Glen nodded, as he tried to cheer up.
Valley Forge |
"Yes Sir !", Glen replied, wiping a tear from his cheek.
At that point everyone looked a little embarrassed.
"May I ask, Sir, where am I going to live ?", Glen then asked, thankfully changing the subject.
"I'm not quite sure, Glen.", the 'Boss' began to reply, shifting uneasily on his seat.
"I don't think the 'Club Jaguar' would be very appropriate for a young man of your age, and the 'Villa Jaguar' is a long way from where Jim lives, and I'm not there very often, so it would mean employing someone to look after you.
I think for the moment it would be best if you stayed at the Penthouse, with Jim, in Vegas.", the 'Boss' concluded, looking hopefully at Jim.
At the same time Glen looked at Jim, apparently hoping for a positive answer.
"Well yes, that's as long as Ethan and Josh, and of course Glaux don't mind.", Jim replied.
"Good.", the 'Boss' said as if it was all settled.
"But for the moment we are still on our road-trip, seeing some of the South West so you, Glen, can can follow the limo in Jim's new convertible, although Don Picaro will be driving, as Jim needs a bit more practice as far as driving goes."
"Well, that's fine by me...", Don Picaro (Faunus) said, rising from the table, but you must excuse me now, Sir, as I have some business to attend to.", and Faunus took his chance to leave the rather awkward meeting.
"And what about schooling ?", the 'Boss' asked.
"Well, Sir, the Academy...",
And 'the Boss' interrupted, "What academy ?".
"Oh, sorry Sir... 'Hargrave Military Academy' - it's in in Chatham, Virginia.
Well they held my place open, considering what happened, but they will need to know in a few weeks if you want me to go back."
The 'Boss' sat and thought for a moment...
Army and Navy Academy |
"Well the best one that I know of in our area is the 'Army and Navy Academy', in Carlsbad, California... so I'll get Franklin to approach them, and we'll see what we can organise - but it will be up to you Glen... and of course we'll all visit - that is you, Jim and myself, before we make a decision.
But I'm afraid Hargrave is too far away.
I want to keep you near by, and I would imagine Jim does as well."
Max listened, intrigued.
All this talk of private schools, and military academies was something completely new to him.
Excuse me for asking, Sir, but are these schools only for boys ?", Max asked.
"Not now, Max - but most of the good ones, even now, only take boys - usually in preparation for a military career.
A military academy academy, in the United States, is an educational institution which prepares candidates for service in the officer corps. It normally provides education in a military environment. Three types of academy exist: pre-school-level institutions awarding academic qualifications, university-level institutions awarding bachelor's degree level qualification, and those preparing officer cadets for commissioning into the US armed services. Those attending military academies usually wear military uniform, and drill and parade with weapons, and much emphasis is placed on sport and physical fitness.
"I think Glen's previous academy was boys only, (Glen nodded), and I know that the 'Army and Navy' is boys only."
"So how do you know about this 'Army and Navy' place ?", Jim asked.
"Oh, I went there...", 'the Boss' replied, as if it was obvious.
Jim, of course, presumed that this was another of Faunus' implanted memories, and he was beginning to seriously wonder what was really real.
School will have to wait, but tell me, Glen, what has happened to all your possessions, and also what happened about the house.”, the ‘Boss’ asked.
Jim looked to the ‘Boss’, realizing that this was something that Faunus might not have taken into consideration.
While he could provide Glen with plausible memories, which the boy seemed to completely believe, how was he to deal with the problem of a house, its contents and the boy’s possessions.
“As far as I know, the house, and everything that was in it was sold, with the money raised coming to you, uncle, from my parents’ will.
The only thing of mine which was kept was my bear, which has been sent by courier service ”, Glen explained.
“Your what ?”, the ‘Boss’ asked, incredulously.
“My bear - ‘Teddy’.
Howard Stark |
Tony Stark |
(The animatronic 'Teddy' was a special 'one-off' model, created by Tony Stark - son of the 'late' Howard Stark, who had been a close friend of 'the Boss'.)
“And where was it sent ?”, the ‘Boss’ asked.
“He was sent to the 'Penthouse', in Vegas.”, Glen replied, as if he was stating the obvious.
“Well... you’re a bit old for a Teddy, aren't you ?”, 'the Boss’ said, looking rather annoyed and disappointed.
“Maybe not, Sir.”, Glen said, being surprisingly adversarial for one so young.
“Wait till you see him, and have a chat with him.”, Glen added.
The ‘Boss’ shook his head, and looked at Jim.
“Well sorry, but I'm far to old to be having ‘chats’ with a cuddly toy.”, the ‘Boss’ said.
Jim smiled indulgently, but secretly he suspected that this was yet another one of Faunus’ little tricks – and that ‘Teddy’ would probably be quite a surprise for the ‘Penthouse Gang' – including Glaux - and 'the Boss’.
“Well I have work to be getting on with, and I need to contact Franklin about this business of a school, so I’ll leave you with Jim and Max for the moment… and as you hardly have any clothes with you, we’d better go into Tucson later and get you fitted out with more stuff before we move on to our next ‘port of call’.”, 'the Boss’ said, rising from his seat, and ruffling Glen’s hair before he went on his way.
The little gesture with Glen’s hair pleased Jim.
The ‘Boss’ rarely ever touched anyone, or showed any affection, and so, regardless of his gruff response to Glen’s talk of ‘Teddy’, the ‘Boss’ did seem to be showing some feelings for the boy.
“OK Glen, now before ‘uncle Alex’ comes back, Max and I are going to have a little swim, but I want you to stay here, where I can keep an eye on you.
And remember, when we go to Tucson, remind 'the Boss’ - politely - to buy you some swim shorts, as there is certain to be a pool at the next hotel.” Jim said, trying to be as friendly as possible.
Glen nodded enthusiastically.
First Max went to the changing rooms, and then came back with his pants and shirt (he already had his Speedos on, like Jim), and then Jim did the same, while Max kept watch on Glen.
(In case you’re wondering why they were keeping a careful watch on Glen, they, unlike maybe some of our readers, had not forgotten about nasty Dr. Brandt – whose agents had already followed them to 'Taliesin West' near Phoenix.)
Meanwhile - back at the 'Penthouse' in Vegas the door buzzed.
Josh picked up the entry 'phone.
"Delivery for Mr. Duncan ....", the voice said politely at the other end.
"Who ?" Josh answered.
"Mr Duncan - it's addressed to the 'Penthouse Building'..."
Josh looked puzzled.
"Who is it ?", Ethan asked, munching his first cheeseburger of the day.
"They say it's a delivery for a Mr Duncan.", Josh said.
"Never heard of him - probably the wrong address...", Ethan said casually.
"The guy from 'Fedex' here looks very keen to get rid of it.", the concierge said.
Ethan looked worried.
"Maybe it's a bomb from Brandt.", Ethan said.
"What... delivered by Fedex.", Josh said to Ethan.
Josh then returned to the phone.
"Does the 'Fedex' guy know who the delivery is from ?", Josh asked.
Josh waited for the reply.
He then turned to Ethan.
"No... apparently it's addressed to Mr Ethan Mark Duncan - here at the 'Penthouse'.", Josh said.
"Fuck !... That's me !", Ethan said, unused to hearing the 'official' name that he had been given by Franklin.
"Tell him to come up !", Ethan said, discarding his cheeseburger, and fumbling in his jeans for his wallet.
A few moments later the main door to the Penthouse buzzed.
Ethan opened the door.
It was the 'Fedex' guy, unshaven, with a very creepy smile, and a very large package - but not the kind that Ethan would be pleased to see.
Ethan showed the 'Fedex' guy a credit card.
Ethan was then handed a very large box with 'FRAGILE' written all over it, in red.
Ethan gave the 'Fedex' guy a tip, and staggered into the living room, placing the box, which was quite heavy, on the floor.
Glaux immediately fluttered over, and sat on the back of his favourite chair in order to inspect the new arrival.
Glaux, of course knew what was in the box.
Josh looked the box over carefully.
"After your name, and our address, it says 'to be looked after by Glaux'.", Josh said.
"That's odd.", Ethan said, turning the box round on the floor.
"Well, there you are, Glaux... what do you want us to do with it ?", Josh said.
"And ?", Ethan asked.
"I think that Glaux wants it to rest a while, before we open it.", Josh said.
"Well that's fine by me.
We can just slowly finish off breakfast until Glaux is ready for us to look inside.", Ethan said.
Everything was fine until the box started softly making odd noises and wobbling.
"Did you hear that ?, Ethan nervously asked Josh.
Josh looked at the box, and then at Glaux.
"There's something that snooty bird's not telling us...", Ethan said.
Glaux then fluttered down onto Ethan's should, and pecked him on the side of his head.
"That hurt, Glaux !", Ethan said, obviously annoyed.
"Well that's what comes of calling Glaux 'snooty', when all he's trying to do is help." Josh explained.
There then followed some clicks and knocks.
"It is a bomb...", Ethan said, by then very scared.
Josh looked at Glaux again, waiting for the little owl to tell them what to do.
"Right !.. Glaux says open it.", Josh said firmly.

The 'Fedex' Guy |
Ethan opened the door.
It was the 'Fedex' guy, unshaven, with a very creepy smile, and a very large package - but not the kind that Ethan would be pleased to see.
Ethan showed the 'Fedex' guy a credit card.
Ethan was then handed a very large box with 'FRAGILE' written all over it, in red.

Glaux |
Glaux, of course knew what was in the box.
Josh looked the box over carefully.

"That's odd.", Ethan said, turning the box round on the floor.

(please remember that Glaux is able to talk to Josh by telepathy - Glaux speaks in 'Owl', but it's telepathically translated into English for Josh).
"But shouldn't we call the police, or the bomb squad, or something ?", Ethan said, hiding behind one of the sofas.
"No, it's a present from Faunus.", Josh said, as he began to remove the packing tape.
Very soon Josh was able to open the cardboard flaps, but all that was visible was lots bobbley white foam packing.
"Come on, Ethan, give me a hand.", Josh said, as he dug into the white bobbles, scattering them over the floor.
Suddenly a furry head popped out from the innumerable bobbles.
"Fuck ! it's a teddy bear !", Ethan exclaimed.
A 'teddy-bear' is a soft toy, in the form of a bear. Developed apparently simultaneously by toy-makers Morris Michtom in the U.S. and Richard Steiff in Germany, in the early years of the 20th century, and named after President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt, the teddy-bear became an iconic 'toy'.
In case you have forgotten, both Josh and Ethan, in 'another time' and 'another place', were ancient Greek slave-boys, and never had a teddy-bear as children - in fact they never had any toys - but Faunus had programmed them with all sorts of information - even inconsequential information - like teddy-bears - so they knew a teddy-bear when they saw one - but they were not prepared for this teddy-bear.
"Plug me in, please !" Teddy in his Box |
"You'll find my USB lead in the compartment on the left side of the box.", the teddy continued.
"I don't believe this !", Ethan said, as he fumbled around among the bobbles, and eventually found a lead - and it was just like the USB charger for his laptop.
Meanwhile, Josh carefully lifted the fluffy teddy bear out of the box, scattering bobbles everywhere.
Clare |
"Clare is your housekeeper.", the bear said.
"Fuck, how did he know that ?", Ethan said, looking closely at the little bear - that blinked at him.
"Faunus told me.", and the teddy blinked again.
"He blinks just like Glaux.", Josh said.
"Yes, I'm just adjusting my focus and aperture settings... and please, Ethan, moderate your language." the bear said.
Ethan and Josh looked at one another, and tried hard not to burst out laughing.
What they hadn't noticed, however, was that the bear was operating perfectly well, despite the fact that they had forgotten to plug in the USB.
"So ... what's your name ? ", Ethan asked.
"Teddy.", Teddy replied.
"Oh well, that's very handy.", Ethan said, surprised at how quickly he had got used to the idea of a talking teddy-bear.
"I think I'm going to like you, Ethan." Teddy then said, quite unexpectedly.
"Well thanks, Teddy.", Ethan replied.
"You see I was programmed to get along well with children.", Teddy explained.
"So Ethan, that just about says it all...", Josh said, grinning.
By now Josh had sat Teddy on the carpet, and the boys sat either side of him, chatting, but they really didn't expect to see what happened next.
Teddy, rather jerkily, stood up.
"Oh my god !... he can move by himself.", Ethan said, staring at the little bear.
"Mm... but a bit wobbly.", Josh said.
"Don't worry, Josh... it's just that I've been in that box for quite a while.
If you don't mind, I'll just have a little walk round to steady myself.", Teddy said.
"Now what are we going to do ?..
He'll be all over the place, and appearing at the most inconvenient moments, and in the most inconvenient places - and what if he can climb, and falls from the deck outside ?", Ethan said, beginning to panic.
"Don't worry, Ethan.
I think he's a bright little chap, and shouldn't be a problem.
What puzzles me is why Faunus sent him to us - and Glaux won't tell me.", Josh said.
At that moment the door buzzer sounded.
"That'll be Zac.", Josh said.
And sure enough, when Ethan opened the door, Zac breezed in, looking very smart in a blue, two piece suite.
"Hi guys ! All ready to go to the 'Combat Club' ?", Zac asked.
"Of course... but...", Ethan began.
"Hello Zac." |
Fuck !.. What's this !", Zac then exclaimed - loudly and apparently panicking, as he felt something tugging at the left leg of his trousers.
"It a bear !", Josh said.
Zac looked down.
"Hello Zac.", Teddy said softly.
"Sorry to surprise you... but will you still be my friend."
Zac looked down unable to believe what he was seeing.
"It's a talking, walking teddy-bear !", Zac said in amazement.
"Yes... and he's mine, Zac - so leave him alone.", Ethan said.
"Well no, actually I belong to Glen, but you can look after me until he arrives.", Teddy explained.
"So what's he called ?", Zac asked, foolishly forgetting that Teddy could speak for himself.
"My name, Zac, is Teddy, and I would rather you didn't talk as if I wasn't here.", Teddy replied, seemingly rather annoyed.
"Sorry Teddy.", Zac said, grinning.
"So who is this 'Glen guy' Teddy is talking about.", Zac asked Ethan and Josh.
"Zac... I've asked you once already - don't talk as if I wasn't here.
They don't know, anyway.
Glen... is Jim's cousin, and he will be coming here when Jim comes back from his trip.
Faunus sent me here in advance - to settle down with you guys.", Ted explained.
"I see, Teddy.", Zac said.
"Well I'm sorry to have upset you, it's just that I've never had a friend before who was a teddy-bear...", Zac said, sitting down and smiling broadly.
"But I think we are all very pleased to see you, especially Ethan, and we hope you will be happy with us."
"Thank you Zac.
That was a very nice speech, and your apology is accepted.", Teddy replied.
"You're a very formal bear, aren't you.", Josh commented.
"Thank you Josh...
Yes I am.
When Faunus made me he said I should always be polite to my friends.", Teddy said, as he climbed up onto Zac's lap.
Zac looked surprised, but he thought it nice that the little bear was now at ease with him, despite their shaky start.
"So later, when you all go to sleep, may I rest beside Ethan ?", Teddy asked.
"What do you mean, 'rest' ?", Ethan asked, puzzled by the odd phraseology.
"Well teddy-bears like me don't sleep - we just sit, or lie down quietly, so as not to disturb anyone.", Teddy explained.
"Do you close your eyes ?", Ethan asked.
"No - so I suppose I can be useful as a burglar alarm - not that I think you would get many burglars this high up - and with all the doors and locks.", Teddy said.
"So if things were happening that in my bedroom that I didn't want you to see, you would see everything ?", Ethan persisted.
"Yes... and I think I know what you are talking about.
Faunus programmed me with lots of information about humans.
In such a case you could always put me in a wardrobe, or a cupboard, or another room.", Teddy said, helpfully.
Josh smiled.
'As usual', he thought, 'Faunus had taken care of everything'.
Glaux, of course, was still on Ethan's shoulder, and seeing how Teddy had obviously taken a fancy to Ethan, Glaux decided to make up to Ethan by nibbling his ear.
Ethan, knowing Glaux quite well, realize what 'game' Glaux was playing, but he was also very fond of Glaux, and said nothing.
(for more information about Novius see Character Sketches)
The 'Boss' warmly shook hands with Novius, and ushered him into the room.
"Marcus... my dear boy !", Novius cried out in recognition, on entering the room.
He walked straight over to Jim, and took Jim's hand.
Then to Jim's surprise, Novius kissed Jim's hand, just as he had when Jim, as Marcus, was 'Dominus'.
Novius then took a pace back, giving himself a full view of Jim.
"You know I did know it was you – when we met by the pool.
You look different now, though – but your eyes… your eyes are the same as then.
I know they call you 'Jim' now – but please understand that to me you will always be my dear Marcus.”, Novius said – his depth of feeling quite obvious.
“Thank you, Novius – and just as for you – when you greeted me that morning I also had a sense of recognition – and of course I will always call you Novius.”, Jim replied, feeling very humbled by his old friend's care and concern.
“So how has it been for you, my lad... since we parted.”, Novius eagerly asked.
“Good and bad... but mainly good.”, Jim began.
“Right at the start I met my Dominus – who here they call 'the Boss’ - but usually I call him ‘Sir’, which Faunus tells me a reasonable translation into this language of our Latin title ‘Dominus’.
And he has looked after me so well, and united me with the other boys, Petronius, who here is called 'Zac', Aurarius, who is called 'Ethan', and Adonios, who is called 'Josh', and of course Glaux.", Jim explained.
"Ah yes, Glaux - Athena's wonderful owl.", Novius said brightly
"Even here, so very far from Olympus, you will need Glaux to watch over you - and perhaps even more so...", Novius added.
"So Novius, sit down and tell what has been happening to you since we last met ?",Jim asked excitedly.
"Well, there's not all that much to tell, and some of it is not entirely pleasant.", Novius began.
Jim looked puzzled, and the 'Boss' looked concerned.
"Faunus told me that he had not explained about some of the things that had happened before you came here - and he felt that you might find it easier to hear about it - if it came from me.
Jim began to brace himself.
"Well I know that whatever happened, you will be able to tell me honestly and truthfully.
Novius looked at Jim seriously.
"Marcus - you don't mind if I call you that - but calling you 'Jim' seems rather disrespectful."
Jim nodded - "Yes ... go on."
And so Novius began.
"Well, Marcus, it was after we came back from our long trip to Greece...
As you might remember, we had attended the Eleusinian mysteries, and then visited Delphi.
After that you became very serious.
I think that was partly because of what you experienced at Eleusis, and also because of the message given to you by the Pythia.
"All was well, however, until you decided to refurbish and take over the running of the amphitheatre at Pompeii, in addition to the amphitheatre at Baiae.
The refurbishment and organisation of the Inaugural Games was a big job, and Petronius and many of the people from the Baiae amphitheatre, including Adonios went to Pompeii - just shortly before the 'great tragedy'.
The first we knew of it was the darkening sky, and then the black dust, falling lightly at first, and then by evening in great swirling clouds.
Of course, we didn't know what had happened - it took time for word to come to us.
At first it seemed like the 'end of the world', with no sun by day and no moon by night, and everything covered in an awful thick coating of what we later learned was volcanic dust.
The grass died, the plants died, along with the trees and bushes.
The beautiful gardens of the 'Villa Auream' became bleak and black - filled with rotting vegetation.
The crops in all the surrounding areas died, and also many of the animals, and food was hard to come by.
Fortunately for us at the villa you had the money to have food brought in, and you also did much for the surrounding area, and the town of Baiae.
Of course we were lucky, being some considerable distance from Vesuvius itself, and much of the population in that area, who had not died on the awful day, simply fled.
Your friend Titus, of course did his best to help - but nothing was ever the same after the eruption.
For you, of course, the worst part was the fact that, as far as you knew, Petronius and Adonios had died in Pompeii on the day of the disaster.
As the days passed, and it seemed clear that the boys had perished, you became more and more quiet and depressed.
I tried to speak with you, but you wouldn't listen - remaining locked in your apartments.
You even rejected Aurarius - who had stayed when the others had gone to Pompeii.
During that time, as you hid yourself away, you left your affairs to Demetrius - your heir, and the natural son of Gnæus - but the feckless boy simply amused himself, and ignored his responsibilities.
Faunus was nowhere to be found, and I feared that you would despair to such an extent that you would take your own life - but I had no one to turn to for advice or help as Terentius was away on business, and I had no idea where he was, and so could not get a message to him.
By then I too was contemplating ending everything.
Weeks later, you were last seen walking along the cliff-top, where the gardens of the villa came to an abrupt end.
You were never seen again.
There was no funeral for you, as your body was never found.
Demetrius became the new Dominus, and I, despairing, retired to my small house in Eturia.
After that I can remember very little - but I know that I became ill, and took to my bed.
The next thing that I have any memory of is of living in a small house in a place called 'Salt Lake City', in Utah - believing that I was a retired professor of philosophy called 'Nathan' - but with no memory at all of my previous life - presumably it was all Faunus' doing.
Later, after I first saw you, here in Tucson, Faunus gave me back the memories of my previous life - some of which, may I say I would rather not have remembered.
But it seems that he thought that some of those memories I should share with you - and so I have."
Novius sat back, looking somewhat exhausted after his long account of what had happened.
"And what about Aurarius ?", Jim asked.
"Apparently, as he didn't go to Pompeii, he didn't die in the volcanic eruption ?", Jim said.
"I think it's best that you didn't know what happened to Aurarius, and it seems that Faunus has not allowed him access to that part of his memory, and probably for good reason.", the 'Boss' interjected.
"Yes Marcus...", Novius added.
"It might be as well just to leave that.
Presumably Aurarius is happy in his new life - so better that we just forget about those times.", Novius concluded, with a slight smile..
"Yes... perhaps...", Jim said, reflectively.
"So... are you coming with us on the rest of our trip ?", Jim asked, enthusiastically.
"Much as I would like to, I think that it is better if I take Gnæus' advice.
He has suggested that I let myself be driven back to this place called Los Angeles, where apparently Josh and Glaux will be waiting for me at a nice villa - and it seems that I can stay there, and Josh will teach me all about this strange new world that I find myself in, and later Faunus will come to visit me, and from there we can decide how things will go for us in the future."
While Jim looked a little disappointed, he agreed with the plan that 'the Boss' had devised for Novius as he remembered how he had taken some considerable time to adjust to his new life.
"Probably that's for the best, Novius, but as soon as we get back from this trip I will come to the villa and visit you.", Jim promised.
"Well I think I've said enough for one night, and anyway, as I get a little older, I get tired more easily, so I'll leave you - if you don't mind." Novius said.
The 'Boss' saw Novius to the door, and they spoke for a moment about Novius' trip to Las Vegas, which it appeared would take place in a day or two.
"So Jim...", the 'Boss' said, after Novius had left.
"How did you feel about that meeting ?"
Jim thought for a moment.
"It was hard - but I was not really surprised.", Jim replied.
"So you think you can go on... and make a go of this new life ?", 'the Boss' asked, catching Jim slightly off-guard.
"Yes Sir...
"With you, Novius and the boys, and of course Faunus...."
"And not forgetting Glaux.", the 'Boss' added...
"Yes, not forgetting Glaux - I think not only myself, but all of us will make a good 'go' of this brave new world.", Jim said - confidently.

'As usual', he thought, 'Faunus had taken care of everything'.

Ethan, knowing Glaux quite well, realize what 'game' Glaux was playing, but he was also very fond of Glaux, and said nothing.
Meanwhile, back at the 'Arizona Inn', Jim and Max were enjoying themselves in the pool, while at the same time keeping an eye on Glen.
Jim, although not worried about Glen, wondered if Faunus' 'programming' had been completely successful.
Anyway, Glen seemed quite happy, so far, watching the people in the pool, and relaxing in the sun.
Jim was not sure where Faunus was, however, and would probably have been surprised to learn that the person who Glen knew as Don Picaro had mysteriously turned up, complete with his ridiculous pink Edsel, in 'Vegas.
So, after about an hour of larking about in the pool, and then sitting with Glen, eating ice-creams, they were interrupted by 'the Boss', who had presumably finished his 'work'.
The 'Boss' told Jim and Max to get changed, and to be ready, with Glen, to go into Tucson for some shopping and lunch.
There are undoubtedly better places to go shopping that Tucson - such as 'Vegas and Los Angeles, but 'beggars can't be choosers', so 'the Boss', who was driving Jim's convertible, parked near a convenient shopping mall.
Fortunately, Glen was quite prepared to go along with Jim and Max's tastes in clothes and shoes, and so they got on with the task of 'kitting out' Glen - with no expense spared, and 'the Boss', (Uncle Alex), very much left them to it.
Glen, of course, thought it was great, being bought all the latest fashions, and so, laden down with lots of bags, the boys and 'the Boss' all headed for a Mcdonald's - although the 'Boss' would have preferred some rather more upmarket food, but he didn't complain.
It seemed that having a young nephew was quite good for 'the Boss', and made him more amenable.
While they were in Mcdonald's 'the Boss' had a quiet word with Max, explaining that he and Jim needed to have a very private talk, and asked Max to look after Glen for the evening.
He then sent Max and Glen off to look in the Mall for some suitable DVDs and CDs for the evening, and explained to Max that the could use Jim's suite, (where Glen had been sleeping), which had a sitting room, equipped with a very large TV and state-of the art DVD and CD Player.
And so everything was set for the evening.

( a separate single bed had been installed in Jim's suite for Glen, so the boys were not sleeping together in the same bed.)
Back in 'Vegas, Zac was wondering what was happening next.
Babysitting a very fluffy bear was not what he had been expecting to do that morning, and he really needed to talk to the boys about Brody's first major appearance at the 'California Combat Club', but was not sure if he should discuss such matters in front of Teddy.
Fortunately for Zac, and the others for that matter, Teddy was not, at the time, telepathic - (he was really, in many ways a very ordinary bear in some ways) - and so there was an awkward silence.
Josh, however, decided to find out more about Glen.
"So, Teddy, tell us, how come Jim's got a cousin ?", Josh casually asked.
"Well Glen rather came 'out of the blue'.", Teddy began, making what he thought was a rather clever little 'in joke' - not that anyone else could appreciate it.
"According to Faunus (and Teddy was carefully putting the onus on Faunus), Glen is the only son of the only brother of the 'Boss'."
The boys looked at one another as they had no knowledge of 'the Boss' having had a brother.
"Both Glen's mother and father have died, and there was no one else in the family prepared to look after Glen, apart from his 'uncle' - who you call 'the Boss'.", Teddy continued.
"So now Glen has joined Jim, Max and his uncle on their trip round the South-West, and he will be returning here when the trip is finished.
I was sent on ahead - I hope you don't mind."
"No... not at all.", Ethan said
"I like you being here... you're so fluffy and cute." Ethan added, rather giving himself away.
At that point Glaux nibbled Ethan's ear again, just to remind him that there was also someone else who was 'fluffy and cute' in the penthouse.

Back in Arizona, Max and Glen returned to Mcdonald's, having bought some DVDs and CDs.
They then all went back to where 'the 'Boss' had parked Jim's ridiculously ornamented convertible.
The drive back to the Arizona Inn seemed a little awkward, and no-one spoke.
Arizona Inn - Tucson - Arizona |
Of course, only 'the Boss' knew what was really going on, and he was not giving anything away.
It wasn't long before they arrived at the 'Arizona Inn'.
"See you later !", Jim said as they separated at the reception, with Max and Glen going to Jim's suite, while the 'Boss' and Jim went to the suite belonging to the 'Boss'.
The 'Boss' unlocked' the door and allowed Jim to enter before him
For some strange reason, despite having known 'the Boss' for such a very long time, Jim felt nervous.
As soon a 'the Boss' entered, he went to the 'house phone', asked for 'room service', and arranged for a meal to be brought up to the room.
The odd thing - as far as Jim was concerned, however, was the fact that 'the Boss' ordered the meal for three.
"So who is your other guest, Sir ?", Jim boldly asked.
"Why, and old friend of yours...", 'the Boss' replied.
"And tell me... what do you think of your new cousin ?", 'the Boss' asked, quickly and purposefully changing the subject, while they were waiting for room service.
"He's very nice, but I know what happened... out there in the desert... and I'm still finding it difficult to realize that the strange little 'grey' guy, who spent his time trying to talk to the Edsel, in now Glen - with a completely different appearance, personality and memories.
"Well yes, I suppose it is odd - and in a way I'm glad that my first knowledge of Glen was as a boy - but over the years I've learned to get used to the strange and amazing things that Faunus can do.", 'the Boss' said, carefully choosing his words.
As 'the Boss' finished speaking there was a soft tap on the door of the suite.
"Ah ... that will be our guest.", 'the Boss' said, smiling.
The 'Boss' opened the door, and there in the corridor stood Novius.

These Mysteries revolved around a belief that there was a hope for life after death for those who were initiated.
Δελφοί - (Delphi) formerly called Pytho (Πυθώ), is famous as the ancient sanctuary which was the seat of Pythia, the oracle who was consulted about important matters throughout the ancient classical world. Moreover, the Greeks considered Delphi the navel (or centre) of the world, as represented by the stone monument known as the Omphalos of Delphi.
