'The stars at night, are big and bright
Deep in the heart of Texas
The prairie sky, is wide and high
Deep in the heart of Texas.'

After returning to the hotel in Roswell, Glen is partially 're-programmed' by Faunus. All goes well, and the 'Boss', who is more that satisfied with the 'new Glen', having completed his researches in Roswell, decides to continue the road-trip by taking the straight highway to Amarillo in Texas, as they travel eastwards. On arriving in Amarillo, Glen has repeated dreams about a strange 'butte' which he believes is in either Texas, or a nearby state. It is eventually identified as the 'Devils Tower', and as the dream might be some form of communications from the 'alien leader', the 'Boss' decides to visit the site, which is in Wyoming
The Devils Tower - Wyoming
In the northeast corner of Wyoming is the country's first national monument - the 'Devils Tower'. A 'laccolithic butte' that is made up of igneous rocks, the Devils Tower is a jaw-dropping geological feature that rises 867 feet above Wyoming's rolling prairies. The 'Devils Tower' National Monument is sacred to many Northern Plains Indian tribes, as well as the Kiowa Tribe, who made their homes in the Black Hills region. With oral storytelling and a history that dates back thousands of years, today American Indian tribes continue to hold sacred ceremonies at the tower, including sweat lodges and sun dances.
'Amarillo is the 14th-most populous city in the state of Texas, United States. Amarillo, originally named Oneida, is situated in the Llano Estacado region. The availability of the railroad and freight service provided by the Fort Worth and Denver City Railroad contributed to the city's growth as a cattle-marketing center in the late 19th century. The city was once the self-proclaimed "Helium Capital of the World" for having one of the country's most productive helium fields. The city is also known as 'The Yellow Rose of Texas' - like in the song - (as the city takes its name from the Spanish word for yellow).  Amarillo operates one of the largest 'meat-packing' areas in the United States. 'Pantex', the only nuclear weapons assembly and disassembly facility in the country, is also a major employer. The location of this facility also gave rise to the nickname 'Bomb City'. The attractions - Cadillac Ranch and Big Texan Steak Ranch - are located adjacent to Interstate 40. - U.S. Highway 66 also passes through the city.'

"Well ....would you believe it ?", Ethan commented, as he read the tourist information booklet about Amarillo he had picked up in a roadside 'diner' on the journey......
But back in Roswell, New Mexico, in the Holiday Inn - earlier - the breakfast table had been a scene of high tension as Glen came down from his room, wearing a pair of Jim's jeans and a t-shirt,  and was introduced, by Faunus to the 'Boss'.
Glen - Breakfast Room - Holiday Inn - Roswell - NM
"This, Sir, is Glen, the young man about whom we spoke last night.
He's having difficulty finding work here in Roswell, but he's only passing through, and actually wants to go to 'Vegas, hoping to obtain a good position.
I took the liberty of suggesting that you might be able to help him, Sir.", Faunus said.
"Isn't Faunus just great at expressing himself....", Ethan whispered to Jim, as they stood nearby watching the introduction.
"It doesn't matter who he talks to - an alien, an Austrian psychiatrist, or a tough wrestler, like Brody...they all fall under his spell.".
Jim smiled.
"Well of course, Ethan... it's called 'animal magnetism'...I read about it on the Internet.
He just hypnotizes them...without them even knowing it.", Jim replied.
"He's always doing it to you..."
Ethan scowled.
"Yes....'suppose so.", Ethan admitted.
"But regardless, have you thought about how we are going to explain about Teddy ?", Jim asked.
"We'll just say he's animatronic....", Ethan replied - grinning.
"Good word, Ethan, but do you know what it means ?", Jim said, giving Ethan a quizzical look.
"Well sort of....like an intelligent 'roboty-thingy' ?", Ethan replied.
Yes....that'll do...", Jim said.
Meanwhile, the 'Boss' shook hands with Glen..
"Pleased to meet you Glen.
Don Picaro here is my close associate, and I trust him implicitly, so if he is happy for you to join us , then I can see no problems.
At the moment we are on a 'road trip' traveling east, but then we shall be returning to 'Vegas, where many of my business interests are.
I will expect you to accompany us.
All your expenses shall be paid - accommodation, food etc....Don Picaro will see to that, and Jim will get you kitted out in some descent clothes.
Incidentally, Don Picaro is usually called by his nickname, 'Faunus' - for reasons that we need not go into at the moment.
Any questions ?".
Glen, (who obviously had no memories of ever having met the 'Boss', Faunus, Jim or Ethan before), was surprised that he had been so easily and quickly accepted.
"I'm very grateful, Sir...", Glen began, but was immediately interrupted by the 'Boss'.
"No need Glen.
Just do your work properly, and all will be well.", the 'Boss' said, brusquely.
And with that, Glen was left to take his seat for breakfast, while the  'Boss' called Jim over, and pretended to discuss the arrangements for the drive to Amarillo.
"So what do you think, Jim ?", the 'Boss asked, guiding Jim into a corner, away from Glen.
"Well, it's good that he's a bit older, but I don't really know how Faunus has programmed him, and I'm pretty sure that Faunus is not finished with that, yet.
I think he's taking it carefully - like the last time he left too many loose ends.", Jim said.
"True....so I think that we should keep a watch on him and make sure that everything fits together well - so do your best with him, Jim....I'm relying on you.", the 'Boss' concluded, patting Jim on the back.
Once breakfast was over, preparations were made for the drive to Amarillo in Texas.
The drive from Roswell to Amarillo was about 214 Miles.....and without stops would take about three and a half hours.
With no Max to help with the packing, everyone had to lend a hand - even including the 'Boss' and Teddy (although Teddy had nothing of his own to pack).
Equally, 'new Glen', who was borrowing Jim's clothes, had nothing of his own to pack, as all his 'predecessors' possessions had been discretely put in the 'trash'.
'Courtyard Amarillo West' - California
As for where they were going to stay in Amarillo - the previous night the 'Boss' had managed to find an 'up-market' hotel, at least as far as the price was concerned - the 'Courtyard Amarillo West'.
Again it was a 'modern' hotel, but it appeared, in the photos on the Internet, to be reasonably 'well appointed' - (as the 'Boss' put it) - which would probably be an improvement of the ubiquitous Holiday Inn 'chain'.
"Unfortunately,", the 'Boss' said,  "it is very difficult find a a tasteful hotel in this part of the US....
I sometimes wonder who they get to design the interior decoration in these places.
The problem with the Southwest is that it is a relatively 'new' part of the US, and only has a vaguely 'frontier' cultural tradition - so 'tasteless modern' is usually the best they can manage.
The' Boss', of course, had 'Roman Patrician' tastes, which were hardly going to be satisfied in this particular 'time' and 'place'.
A short while after breakfast, with Chuck's help, they loaded up the 'stretch' Cadillac, and also Jim's auto.
Faunus' Edsel was no where to be seen - so it had either been sent back to 'Vegas, or just 'magicked away' - with Faunus you could never  tell.
The 'Boss' and Faunus traveled in the Cadillac, while Ethan and Glen traveled in Jim's auto, which Jim drove himself.
This arrangement gave the 'Boss' and Faunus the opportunity to have a confidential discussion in the rear passenger compartment of the Cadillac limousine.
Ethan, however, found himself in the rather awkward situation of having to travel with Glen.
Ethan had no idea of how much Glen knew about the rather strange situation regarding himself, the 'Boss', Jim and the others, and Ethan was unsure if he should say anything about Teddy, who was sitting beside him, hidden a a large plastic shopping bag.
Then there was also the question of the 'aliens', and how much Glen knew about them.
Regardless, they slowly drove away from the Holiday Inn at Roswell, and made their way to the Interstate.
"So... how do you like working for the 'Boss' ?, Ethan asked, somewhat un-diplomatically.
Glen turned and looked at Ethan a little strangely.
"Well so far I haven't done any work for him...", Glen replied.
"True...", Ethan replied, wondering what to say next.
"So what kind of business does the 'Boss' run ?", Glen asked."
(that was good because it meant that Ethan - at that point - didn't have to think up a new topic of conversation)
"Oh, lots of things.....hotels, gambling, clubs, sports, import and export....that kind of thing.", Ethan replied casually.
"And what do you think he'll want me to do ?", Glen asked.
"No idea....", Ethan replied - and he was being completely honest.
California Combat Club - Las Vegas - Nevada
"And what's your job, Ethan ?", Glen asked.
In reality, of course, Ethan was just the 'special little guy' - a kind of 'cute' mascot, and a favorite of the 'Boss' - but Ethan couldn't admit to that.
"Oh...I'm involved in security for the 'Boss'...", Ethan boldly said, capitalizing on his one and only 'security operation' at the 'California Combat Club' in 'Vegas.
Glen looked suitably impressed, particularly as he could see that Ethan was carrying a barely concealed 'Colt Defender' in a very expensive looking leather holster.
And how did you get into 'security', Glen asked (possibly hoping that that was the kind of work that the 'Boss' had in mind for himself).
Ethan's 'Macho Image'
"Oh, it was through Zac.
You'll probably meet him later.
He's the guy who taught me to shoot....He's also my training partner at the gym.", Ethan continued, elaborating on his 'macho image'.
Zac

if you are new to 'Club Jaguar' you can go to 'Character Sketches' to find out more about Zac

"So where's Zac now ?", Glen asked.
"'Vegas - probably at the 'Combat Club'.", Ethan replied.
Glen , of course, was none the wiser, having never been to 'Vegas, and at that point thought it best to change the subject...
"So..... do you mind if I ask you what's in the bag..... after all there's plenty of space in the trunk.
Is it something valuable ?", Glen asked, being unusually forward.
Normally Ethan would have been put out by such a question, but it was just what he wanted, as it gave him an excuse to deal with a problem that he had already discussed with Jim.
"Yes...very valuable - and quite special.", Ethan said, a little mysteriously.
"So...?", Glen asked, obviously intrigued.
"It's a teddy-bear...", Ethan said in a matter of fact way.
"A what ?", Glen said, obviously not expecting such and answer.
"A teddy-bear.", Ethan said firmly.
"Your teddy-bear ?", Glen asked - very puzzled.
"Well...sort of." Ethan replied, opening the bag.
Teddy in his Walmart Bag
"So what's so special ... and why is it valuable ?", Glen asked.
"Well perhaps Teddy should tell you.", Ethan said.
Teddy took his cue, and popped up from the Walmart bag.
"Hello Glen....pleased to meet you... I'm Teddy.", Teddy said, very politely.
"It talks !", Glen exclaimed, obviously very surprised.
"No Glen...he talks.
And he moves and walks...and behaves just like a small, fluffy person - which he is.", Ethan explained.
"He's an animatronic robot.", Jim said, interrupting Ethan, just in case Ethan forgot his special word.
"So what...are you taking him to Amarillo to sell him or something ?", Glen asked.
"Oh no !", Ethan replied, quite shocked.
"He couldn't be sold - He's a present to me from the 'Boss' - in case I get lonely.
You see, Jim's my real, best friend - from a long time ago - but he's often very busy, so, I can talk to Teddy, and he keeps me company.", Ethan explained - twisting the facts just a little.
Gathering Dust Storm on the Highway to Amarillo - Texas
"Yes... I see.", Glen said...although he found the whole explanation - and Teddy - very strange.
But things were happening, and the conversation petered out.....because, as they drove on, the light on the highway took on a yellowish tinge, and strange clouds came up on the horizon.
"Looks like there's some bad weather coming up, Ethan.
Better 'phone the 'Boss' and see what he wants to do.", Jim said, looking back over his shoulder momentarily.
Ethan saw the ominous clouds and, just for a moment, wondered  if the alien's UFO would emerge from the darkening sky, but he quickly pulled himself together and got busy on his cell-phone.
Moments later it was obvious that Ethan was taking instructions from the 'Boss' over the 'phone.
"Chuck's looking for a diner....somewhere where we can get off the highway.....so watch out for him turning off.", Ethan said to Jim.
They were lucky as, in a very short time, Chuck had obviously found a diner.
"So what are you going to do with the bear when we go into the diner ?", Glen asked.
"Teddy - please.", Ethan said, sounding a little annoyed.
"Call him Teddy.......
Teddy will come with us, in his shopping bag....'cause if he just walks in, people will get a bit freaked-out.", Ethan explained.
"So why not just put him in the trunk, or leave him on the seat ?", Glen asked.
"Not possible....", Ethan said sharply.
"He's very valuable, and anyway, he's one of the 'gang'...", Ethan added.
"And what gang's that ?", Glen asked, grinning, as he imagined a 'gang' of fluffy stuffed toys.
"The 'Penthouse Gang'....my..... you do ask lots of questions -  and before you ask, it's called the 'Penthouse Gang' because we all get together in a penthouse in 'Vegas.", Ethan replied.
"Come on, Ethan.", Jim said, getting tired of Glen's questions, as he parked up.
"Let's go in, and get some food."
"Ah.....it's another one of these places....", Ethan said, as they entered the diner.
"And what do you mean by that ?", the'Boss' asked, as he followed Ethan into the diner - a diner which looked suspiciously like a 'time warp' from about 1940.
"Oh...northing, Sir..", Ethan replied, worried that he may be told off.
"Have you got Teddy safely in that bag ?", the 'Boss' asked Ethan quietly.
"Yes Sir...he's safe.", Ethan replied.
They sat down and, as Glen was sat next to the 'Boss', he risked a little conversation.
"Excuse me, Sir, but what's all this business about the bear...?
Is it some kind of practical joke - like fooling new people with a bit of a 'game' ?", Glen asked.
The 'Boss' turned, and looked at Glen very seriously.
"Not at all, Glen.
Teddy is an important member of this organization, and I insist on him being respected.
Now you may find that strange, but let me assure you that if you continue to work with me, you will encounter many more strange events and situations, and I will require you to deal with them in a responsible, and a 'confidential' manner.
So ....no careless talk outside our group....do you understand ?".
Glen looked puzzled, but also a little nervous.
"Yes, of course, Sir.
I was only checking.", Glen replied.
Texas Diner
Meanwhile Ethan had wandered off, and had found some leaflets about Texas and Amarillo - obviously provided for tourists - not that many tourists would probably stop at this particular Diner.
"Well ....would you believe it ?", Ethan commented, as he quickly read the slightly grubby leaflet.
"Sounds like a weird place."
"Why weird ?". Jim asked, as he looked through the menu.
"Well, it's a good place for helium, if you're feeling a bit down....", Ethan giggled.
"Clever, Ethan.", Jim muttered, as he checked that Teddy was safe and comfortable in his plastic bag.
"It's also called 'Bomb City'...because they make, and take apart atom bombs - and it's famous for 'meat-packing' - and I'm wondering if anyone's worked out that that phrase has more than one meaning...?"
The Meal at the Diner
Jim grinned.
"Trust you to notice that."
"So, are we ready to order ?", the 'Boss' asked.
The food came with little delay, and as they ate, they hardly noticed that the dust-storm had passed, and the skies had brightened, they were onto their coffee.
Glen looked around.
"Anywhere where I can get some cigarettes ?", Glen asked.
(considering their 'previous lives', none of the 'boys', or the 'Boss' smoked).
Faunus looked intently at Glen, staring at the puzzled boy's eyes.
"Glen....you don't smoke.", Faunus said slowly and firmly.
"Of course not.
I don't smoke.", Glen said mechanically.
"So....a problem with your programming !", Ethan said quietly.
"Yes Ethan...it never occurred to me."
"Sir....where are we going to stay ?", Jim interrupted, trying to immediately change the subject.
'Courtyard Hotel' - Amarillo West - Texas
"The 'Courtyard Hotel', Amarillo West the 'Boss' replied.
"And am I going to like it ?", Jim asked, with a cheeky smile.
"Well, it's got a pool and a gym, and it's clean and modern.....", the 'Boss' paused.
"But we're not staying there for long...", the 'Boss' said, leaving Jim to arrive at the obvious conclusion.
"But it's a 'Marriott' hotel, so it's quite good, and moderately expensive.", the 'Boss' added.
As the weather had improved considerably, the 'Boss' decided that they should continue their journey.
Teddy, of course, was pleased, as it was uncomfortably hot in his Walmart bag, and now that Glen knew about him, Teddy could 'ride shotgun', (sit up in the front), next to Jim who was driving.
Little was said between Glen and Ethan as the journey continued - partly because Faunus had put a temporary 'block' on Glen in case he said anything else stupid (like asking about cigarettes).
It was Faunus' intention to complete the programing of Glen with a very plausible background history once they were settled in Amarillo, and in order to decide on the appropriate details, Faunus was having a long discussion with the 'Boss' in the privacy of the passenger compartment of the Cadillac limousine.
"Wow !.... So soon we'll be in Amarillo....", Ethan said, attempting to break the rather embarrassing silence.
"Yes...", Glen replied, mechanically.
Jim, as he drove, smiled to himself, guessing what Faunus had done.
"So have you ever been to Amarillo ?", Ethan asked Glen.
"I don't know....I can't remember.", Glen replied - in a good imitation of a robot.
Teddy looked at Jim, puzzled.
"Oh shit !....here we go again.", Ethan said under his breath, but still audible.
"What do you mean...Ethan ?", Glen asked.
"Oh nothing.....it's just that Jim had a little problem with his memory some time ago.
It's a common problem round here.", Ethan said - thinking his answer was at least slightly humorous.
Meanwhile, in the Cadillac, which Jim was following, the 'Boss' and Faunus were working out the 'background story' for Glen.
"So where should we have his original home ?", Faunus began.
The 'Boss' thought for a moment.
"What about Ohio....? - it's a state about as far away as we can get, so he won't be wanting to go back there to see his (fictitious) family and friends." the 'Boss' suggested.
"So where is it ?". Faunus asked.
(Faunus may often seem to be 'all-knowing' and 'all-wise', but surprisingly he didn't have a complete knowledge of this 'alternative America'.),
"It's in the far Northeast - and Nevada - and California, as I presume you know, are in the extreme southeast.", the 'Boss' explained, looking slightly amused.
"And the town ?", Faunus asked - not knowing the name of any towns (cities) in Ohio.
"Cleveland, I think.", the 'Boss' replied.
"Can I see it ?", Faunus asked.
The 'Boss' opened his laptop, and quickly brought up an image.
Cleveland Cityscape - Ohio
"A bit like northern Hellas...very hot summers and cold - usually snowy winters." the 'Boss added.
And is there any reason why he might leave there ?", Faunus asked.
"Possibly - Cleveland has a very high crime rate.
Apparently Cleveland has the fifth highest murder rate in the United States, per capita.", the 'Boss' explained.
And as you probably realize, young people of Glen's age form a very high percentage of those murdered - often gang related." the 'Boss' continued.
"OK...that's a good explanation for him leaving.....so, how did he get here ?", Faunus asked.
"Well, there are two main ways that a young man, without much money would travel such a distance.
- Greyhound bus, or 'hitching'.", the "Boss" replied.
Greyhound Bus Company - Logo
The Greyhound Bus, is an intercity bus company serving over 3,800 destinations across North America. The company's first route began in 1914, and the company adopted the Greyhound name in 1929 and is based in Dallas, Texas. Greyhound, and its sister companies in First Group America are the largest motor-coach operators in the United States and Canada.
Greyhound Bus Station - Streamline Moderne
Raymond Loewy
Raymond Loewy was the 'in-house' designer for the Greyhound Bus Company - designing in the 'Streamline Moderne' style, which became the quintessential style of 'modern' America.
'Streamline Moderne is an international offshoot of Art Deco architecture and design that emerged in the 1930s. It was inspired by aerodynamic design. Streamline architecture emphasized curving forms, long horizontal lines, and sometimes nautical elements. In industrial design, it was used in railroad locomotives, telephones, toasters, buses, appliances, and other devices to give the impression of sleekness and modernity. Among the many designs for which Loewy is famous are the classic Coca-Cola bottle, Lucky Strike Cigarette packets, Studebaker automobiles, the logos for Exxon, Shell, Hoover etc. and the list goes on - almost endlessly
Greyhound Super Scenicruiser
And how much would it cost by Greyhound Bus ?", Faunus asked.
"About $250-300 - roughly, and I doubt if he would have that much money spare, considering that he would also have to have money for accommodation and food when he got here.
Hitch-hiking, of course is very dangerous, particularly in urban areas.
Of course, either way, he would probably have to 'hustle'.", the "Boss" continued.
"So your suggesting he's homosexual ?", Faunus asked.
"Well no, not really.", the "Boss" replied.
"In our 'time' and 'place', as you know, boys and men simply had sex, and there were no words for what form that sex took.
Here, in this 'time' and 'place', they have invented lots of words.
The term 'homosexual' was first used in 1868 by a German, Karl-Maria Kertben - before then it didn't exist.
At that time a homosexual was considered to be mentally ill - although what that would say about all those men in ancient Greece and Rome I couldn't say....", the "Boss" explained, smiling.
"No...our Glen should be programmed as what people today would call 'bisexual', but more actually he should be a boy who just likes sex, without the entanglements of 'romantic love' which seem to attach to sexual relationships with girls and women."
"So...he's left Cleveland because to him it's a dangerous place - and come, probably by Greyhound bus, hustling to get the money for the fare and for food.", Faunus summarized.
"And what about his family ?", Faunus asked.
Welcome to Amarillo - Texas
"Working class - he went to public school, (for English readers that means 'State School' - not 'private' school), and probably lived in an apartment, maybe Public Housing (English readers - Council Housing).", the 'Boss' suggested, and Faunus nodded.
"And we'll have him with parents who are separated, and he's an only child - we don't want him going after his 'roots'...", the 'Boss' added.
"But we are coming into Amarillo, so if there are any other questions, then just contact me.", the 'Boss' said helpfully.
In Jim's auto, behind the limousine of the 'Boss', Ethan was looking around as they entered Amarillo.
"Wowy...! what a freaky sign - and a freaky horsey ! Like the one in the Roswell Museum.....", Ethan said, not that Glen was paying any attention.
'Courtyard Hotel' - Amarillo - Texas
It didn't take long for Chuck to find his way to the 'Courtyard Hotel', at 8006 I-40 West (just in case you want to stay there).
The problem then was checking Glen in at the reception.
"Well what do we call him ?", Faunus asked, as Chuck held the door of the Cadillac open for Faunus and the 'Boss'.....
Now arriving in a truly huge, majestic Cadillac Limousine was one way of smoothing out any difficulties, and receiving excellent service in any Hotel, however 'up-market' - and the 'Courtyard' was good, but not really 'upmarket'.
"We'll call him Johnson, - Glen Johnson - like Jim - after all they look similar, and could be brothers.", the 'Boss' replied, casually to Faunus' question.
Reception Desk - 'Courtyard Hotel' - Amarillo - Texas
And so they all arrived at the very 'clinical' looking reception.
Ethan was first, (with Teddy hidden in his Walmart bag) - and Ethan, of course had all the appropriate cards, (as supplied by Franklin)).
Glen - now Glen  Johnson, and legally eighteen - was clutching one of Faunus' blank cards (?) which the reception would recognize as an identity card.
Jim, had a full set of genuine cards, also supplied by Franklin, indicating that he was a very rich boy, and finally the 'Boss', taking responsibility for the bill for the entire group, with a credit card with enough on it to buy the whole hotel - finalized the registration procedure
Faunus, of course, required no identity or credit cards, as everyone mistook him for the manager of the hotel chain.
"How the fuck does he do it..?", Ethan whispered to Jim, as all the staff scraped and bowed to Faunus, who introduced himself as the ubiquitous 'Mr Smith'.
"It's some form of 'mind control' - like the aliens use.", Jim replied.
"You mean Faunus is one of them aliens ?", Ethan asked quietly, sounding alarmed.
"Of course not....but hes's definitely not 'human' - the 'alien leader' realized that." Jim said - which didn't really make Ethan feel any better.
"So...we're in..." Ethan said.
"Now what do we do ?...."
The  'Boss' looked quizzically at Ethan.
"Well as we don't have Max now to help us with the luggage, get the 'bell-hops' to take our luggage and show us to our rooms."
"Right, Sir.......and then I'll make inquiries to find out where the nearest McDonald's is.", Ethan said.
So then, after a few minutes, having got the 'bell-hops' working, Ethan spoke to Faunus.
"When do you think you can get Glen 'programmed', and 'switched on' again - 'cause he's a bit of a nuisance as he is now - walking about like a 'zombie' - getting in everyone's way.", Ethan asked.
"Oh...you noticed.....well soon...", Faunus replied.
"A couple of hours, maybe three, and then you and Jim can take him out, and get him some new clothes and trainers, and maybe even a cow-boy hat.", Faunus suggested.
Ethan then collected Jim and Glen, and inquired at the reception desk as to where there were some good quality mens-wear shops.

Westgate Mall - Amarillo - Texas
Glen returned after spending some time in his room with Faunus.
As Faunus had predicted, Glen, on his return to  reception, seemed quite 'normal' - in fact 'charming'.
Previously, while Glen had been with Faunus, Jim and Ethan had been studying maps of Amarillo, and the surrounding area, and had also been discussing the implications of having a 'new Glen'.
The 'Boss', as usual, had been attending to business on his laptop.
"So what are we doing, guys ?", Glen asked, interrupting Jim and Ethan....as if nothing had been happening.
Ethan tried to act equally 'normally', as if there had been no change in Glen's behavior.
"Apparently, Glen, a good place to 'hang out' in Amarillo is Westgate Mall.", Ethan replied, continuing to be unsure quite how to react to a very 'normal' Glen.
"Well let's go !", Glen said, enthusiastically.
"So Jim and Ethan could see no reason why not.
Rather that bother Chuck, Ethan decided to get a taxi.
Westgate Mall, according to the charming receptionist at the 'Courtyard Hotel', was located on 7701 West Interstate 40 - and has more that 112 shops and a cinema.
Westgate Mall Entrance - Amarillo - Texas
"Well, there it is guys !", Glen said, having apparently enjoyed the ride.
"Yes...", Ethan said grumpily, "That was quick (?)
But it looks a bit boring."
"Yes, but I don't think that Amarillo is really a bright spot for architecture.", Jim responded.
"Probably more famous for 'meat packing' and hydrogen,", Ethan added - remembering what he had read in the brochure at the roadside diner.
They then got out, and Jim paid off the taxi, and they walked to the main entrance.
"So what are you going to buy....or  are you just going to hang out, and look around ?". Glen asked, sounding a little naive.
"Glen....I think you misunderstand this trip.
This is to get you clothes and shoes, so you've got to decide what you're going to buy.", Jim explained.
Glen looked startled.
"But guys...I got no money.
Didn't Faunus, or 'Picaro', or 'whatever his name is' tell you....
I spent all the money on my bus-fare to get here, and then I was gonna hustle to get it together to organize somewhere to stay...that's until Faunus came along, and offered me this job....", Glen said, getting more and more embarrassed.
"So where did you start with this 'bus-thingy' ?. ", Ethan asked.....not knowing much about buses.
"I started off from Cleveland....", Glen began.
"Cleve...where ?", Ethan interrupted.
"Cleveland !....You guys are real weird....Cleveland in Ohio, up North !", Glen explained.
"Oh yes, of course....", Ethan said, trying not to arouse Glen's suspicions.
Jim smiled, realizing that Faunus' plan had worked, and he was interested to see where Glen's story would lead them.
Undoubtedly this was not the sweet little Glen.... nephew of the 'Boss', who had appeared in the Arizona desert - and Jim began to think that he may well prefer this new young man that Faunus had created.
"So why did you travel from Cleveland to Amarillo ?", Jim asked.
"Well I know this sounds corny, but I wanted to have a 'new start'....to get as far away from the other place as possible.", Glen said.
"OK....well lets just get back to getting you some clothes and things...", Jim said.
"Like I said....I can't afford to buy anything...and I'm not giving you a 'hard luck' story, or trying to 'panhandle' you..", Glen said, as he was predictably interrupted by Ethan...again.
"Pan-what ...?, Ethan asked.
"What's wrong with you Ethan ?",Glen asked, sounding quite exasperated.
"Panhandle means to beg for money - or cheat someone into giving you money...", Glen explained.
"Oh...I see.
Well I know you're not asking for money...but there's no problem with money - so stop making a fuss about it.", Ethan said, desperate to get on with some shopping.
"Well that might be easy for you to say - but most people have real problems with money - or the lack of it !", Glen said, beginning to sulk.
"Look....the 'Boss' has taken you on....Jim here is his 'deputy-like' - and as an employee you automatically get an 'advance' so where's the problem ?", Ethan asked.
"An advance of what...?", Glen asked, by them completely confused.
"Well lets say..... five thousand dollars - just for the moment - what do you say Jim ?", Ethan suggested.
"Sounds OK to me.", Jim replied.
"You must be fuckin' crazy !", Glen said.
"You don't even know me !". Glen muttered, not really knowing what to do.
"Well..I think we do.", Ethan said, grinning at Jim.
"It's a game...right ?", Glen said, getting angry.
"Oh just shut up, and let's go and buy something....", Ethan said, walking into a nearby men's store.
Glen shrugged his shoulders, and followed Ethan into the shop.
In next to no time Ethan was dashing round the shelves, picking up jeans, shirts, belts and boots for Glen to try on, while the 'laid back' Texan shop assistant looked on, bewildered.
Glen in his Western Gear - West Mall shop
This was no more that Jim had expected - as Ethan was addicted to clothes shopping - and was now in his 'seventh heaven'.
Soon Glen was bundled into a changing room by Ethan, where Glen was forced to try on numerous combinations of clothes.
In the end, Glen was pushed out onto the shop floor for Jim to inspect.
"You see....I was right...blue does suite you - it matches his eyes...!", Ethan declaimed, triumphantly. (quoting from a movie he's seen in the penthouse home cinema - 'Cabaret' as it happens)
And so Glen stood in the shop, looking very embarrassed, as Jim inspected the shirt, jeans, belt and boots.
"Excellent choice, Ethan.....
And what do you think of it ?", Jim asked, as Glen shyly looked at himself in the mirror.
"Well not what I would usually wear...but then I am in Texas....but can we afford all of this.?", Glen asked.
The shop assistant looked nervously to Jim.
"No problem....". Jim said.
Glen shook his head in disbelief.
"Give the guy your card.", Jim told Ethan.
Ethan passed the card over.
"Here you are, my man, and take this for your trouble.", Ethan said, with a flourish, handing over a crumpled bill to the startled assistant.
"Why not wear your new stuff, Glen.....you look real cool....", Ethan said.
Teddy in his Walmart Bag
Glen smiled, went back into the changing room, and retrieved his  clothes, which in fact belonged to Jim, and left the assistant to provide a bag.
"Seeing that bag reminds me....what happened to that teddy-bear I saw in the auto on the way here ?", Glen asked.
Jim and Ethan looked at one another, wondering just what else Glen might have remembered.
"That was no teddy-bear....", Ethan replied.
"That was 'Teddy', and he's sitting comfortably on my bed, back at the hotel.", Ethan said.
"I see...and I also have a really stupid memory of the bear......",Glen began.
"Teddy.", Ethan interrupted.
"Yes, Teddy....talking to me...", Glen said, sounding puzzled.
"But then a lot of my memories seem a little mixed up.....", his voice trailing away as he realized how stupid what he had just said sounded.
"No problemo...", Ethan replied.
"And yes...Teddy did talk, 'cause he's a 'robot-thingy'.", Ethan said, deciding to get the whole matter out into the open.
Courtyard Hotel - Amarillo - Texas - Sunset
"Yes...an 'animatronic robot' - a present from the 'Boss' to Ethan.", Jim added - bending the truth, just a little.
"Well that's good...I was beginning to think I was going crazy..", Glen said, sounding obviously relieved.
"But I'm still confused about you guys....I mean, where do you get your money from ? - because it's strange that you talk as if money's no problem, and I've never met anyone else who talks like that."
Now it's important to understand that, despite all of Faunus' 'programming', it was still difficult for Jim, Zac, Josh and Ethan to understand how money operated in this 'alternative America'. Having spent their boyhood and teenage years as slaves they had never been paid any wages or salary. Their food, clothing and housing had all been provided, and being slaves of a fabulously wealthy patrician, they had always had the best of everything. In this 'new life' they felt that they were in the same kind of situation with the 'Boss' - and so money meant very little to them - the only difference being that before money had meant gold coins, and now if was credit cards -  lot easier to carry. The only danger was that other people (like Glen, Brody etc) found their behavior and attitudes, in this (and other matters), very strange.
Clare
Franklin

"Well, it's simple, Glen ...we work for the 'Boss', and he provides us with a 'cool' place to live, transport, pays all the bills, has people to look after us - like Franklin and Chuck and Clare, and keeps our credit cards topped up.", Jim explained, as if it was all quite normal and obvious.
"Amazing.....!", was all that Glen could say.
Amarillo Sunset - Texas
Vittorio Carvelli
And so they arrived back at the Courtyard Hotel just in time to see one of those spectacular Texas sunsets.

"So, time for dinner !", Ethan said, rubbing his hands together in anticipation.
And as they entered the dining room they 'bumped' into the 'Boss'.
"Well Glen.... you look like a real Texas 'dude' !", the 'Boss said, with a grin.
"You really mean that, Sir ?", Ethan asked, not sure if the 'Boss' was being a little sarcastic.
The Penthouse Building - Las Vegas
"Really...the style suites you, Glen...", the 'Boss' countered.
'Penthouse Gang'
Jim was pleased - as it seemed that the 'Boss' had take a real liking to the 'new' Glen - and then Jim reminded himself that he should stop thinking about 'the new Glen' - this was simply 'Glen', and hopefully he would become a valued member of the 'group'.
They all sat down in the restaurant, having been joined by Faunus, and let the 'Boss' order for them.
"So what's this 'Penthouse Gang' I've heard mentioned ?", Glen asked.
"Ah....good question....", Ethan began to answer, as he was interrupted by the 'Boss'.
'Villa de los Jaguares' - outside Los Angeles - California
"The 'Penthouse Gang' are a number of my associates who all live in Las Vegas in a large apartment block that I own.
There's Jim, and Ethan whom you've met - and of course Teddy.
And then there's Josh,  - although Josh is at present in Los Angeles at the 'Villa de los Jaguares' with Novius, an old friend of mine - so that makes four....and of course there's Glaux, our owl.
And then there's Zac - head of security, and much more, who also lives in 'Vegas, in the apartment block, along with Brody.
So actually there's seven in the gang - if we include Teddy and Glaux - and you'll make eight.
Zac
Novius, of course, is too elderly and dignified to be a member of anybody's 'gang'."
At that point Glen was looking very puzzled.
"And who is the 'leader' of this 'gang' ?", Glen managed to ask.
"Why, Jim of course.....always has been....", the 'Boss' explained.
"No...that's not strictly true, Sir - you were the leader, the 'Dominus', to begin with - and then you made me the leader....remember ?", Jim interrupted.
"And when was that ?", Glen asked.
"Oh...a very, very long time ago...", the 'Boss' replied.
Glen looked startled.
Glaux  at the Penthouse
"But...but Jim doesn't even look out of his teens !", Glen spluttered.
"No matter...it was a very, very long time ago.", the 'Boss' repeated, emphatically.
"Of course, Sir..", Glen said, sounding embarrassed.
Although it was not called the 'Penthouse Gang' at the time, Jim [then known as Marcus] became the leader ['Dominus'] on the demise of the 'Boss' [Gnæus Octavian Gracchus] - but that was in 'another time' and 'another place' - rarely brought to mind, and rarely spoken of.
"And this Glaux character....he's a real owl ?... or another one of these animatronic robot things, like Teddy ?", Glen asked, obviously intrigued.
"Well he's real....but a bit odd.", Ethan tried to explain.
"He was originally given to Jim, but now Josh looks after him most of the time."
Glen shook his head.
"Well, if you don't mind me saying, I think your'e all a 'bit odd' - except for the 'Boss', and Faunus.", Glen said.
"Well that just shows how wrong you can be, my old Texan partner....", Ethan said, putting on a very bad Texan accent, "because Faunus is the oddest of the lot !".
At that point Faunus gave Ethan a withering look - and Ethan instantly 'shut up' - and everyone round the table looked a bit embarrassed.
"So....what-cha like doin', Glen ?", Ethan asked, trying to lighten the atmosphere.
'Back to the Future' - Skateboard
"Oh...hangin' out, skateboarding and such like.", Glen replied, trying to take up Ethan's offer of an 'safe' chat.
"Skate-whating ?", Ethan asked, in his inimitable way.
"Skateboarding, like in 'Back to the Future'.", Glen replied.
Ethan looked confused.
"But I'm already in the future...so why would I want to go back ?". Ethan replied, obviously not understanding what Glen was talking about - Ethan hadn't seen 'Back to the Future'.
Glen shook his head.
"Ethan....I really can't make you out...", Glen sighed.
"So....any way...what else do you like doing ?", Ethan carried on, blithely ignoring Glen's obvious confusion.
"Well, when I was in high-school - before I left - and 'ran away'....I liked high-school wrestling.", Glen explained.
"I see...", Ethan replied - a little too meaningfully - while at the same time there were a number of significant looks and raised eyebrows round the table.
"What ? Did I say something wrong ?", Glen asked.
"No...no.....not at all..", the 'Boss' replied - trying to be somewhat dismissive.
At that moment, seeing that the 'Boss' was, in reality, interested, Glen pulled out his battered old wallet, opened it, and took out a photo, and passed it to the 'Boss'.
"That's a photo of the last match I was in - which I won - just before I left home.", Glen said, a little sadly.
"Very nice...", the 'Boss' remarked,
"And by the way, tomorrow I'll get you a new wallet - that one's near enough finished."
Glen in Wrestling Gear - Cleveland - Ohio
"Thank you, Sir.", Glen said, perking up, not just because of the offer of a new wallet, but also because the 'Boss' appeared to be impressed by his athletic ability.
"Can I see, Sir ?", Ethan asked excitedly.
The 'Boss' handed over the photo.
"Wowy ! - very nice !...I can see you're goin' to fit in here very well !", Ethan said, with a big grin.
Jim looked across the table at Glen and wondered.
Was the photo that Ethan had just been looking at real ?
After all, Glen had never wrestled in high-school in Cleveland.
Glen had never even been to Cleveland - if fact, in reality, Glen had originally been an abandoned alien, in the desert in Arizona.
And yet here they were, admiring a photo of Glen (the one time alien, 'Roger'), disporting himself in a high school gym, wearing a sexy looking leotard.
So was it just another of Faunus' 'virtual' creations, like his driving licenses, credit cards, and even automobiles - like the ridiculous pink Edsel.
And did Glen really believe the 'story' he was telling ?
Jim looked to Faunus, who was sitting with a satisfied smile, watching, as the 'Boss' and Ethan listened with interest to Glen's tales of the wrestling mat.
And once again Jim was wondering - what was real, and what was not - and wondering also if it really mattered.
"Are you still with us ?", the 'Boss' asked Jim, sounding a little annoyed.
"I was just saying that Glen should get on well with Brody".
Jim instantly came out of his reverie.
"Yes, of course, Sir.
The Platinum Edition DVD
Brody's First Fight
And perhaps they could train together...", Jim added.
As their dinner came to an end, a courier arrived from 'Vegas.
The courier handed a package to the 'Boss'.
The 'Boss' rose from his seat, and went into the reception area to open the package - he obviously wanted some privacy.
On opening the package he smiled, close up the package and returned to the table.
"Good news boys !...We've got the new video of Brody's first fight !", the 'Boss' said - obviously pleased.
He then handed out the videos - each enclosed in a discreet, unmarked envelope.
He passed one to Faunus - then to Jim and Ethan, and finally, with a slight hesitation, gave one to Glen.
"I'll just say this to Glen ....
Don't leave the DVD lying about in your room, where the staff might find it.
It's 'for your eyes only' - and we'll all discuss it tomorrow - in private.
And Glen....Brody's 'ring name' is Dillon.... just in case you are confused."
And so they all parted company once the dinner was over, eager to view the new DVD.
Faunus disappeared....somewhere.
Ethan joined Jim in his suite, and Glen went off to his own room.

For Ethan and Jim - and also for Glen, it was certainly to be a night to remember - but for very different reasons.

'So true love triumphs once again - It always makes it in the end
And if you let the heart run free - It will return faithfully'

A 'pretty' sentiment indeed, and in the case of Ethan and Jim - very apt...
For Glen things were not quite so easy or pleasant.
Surprisingly, when Glen got to his room he was suddenly overcome with an overwhelming urge to sleep that he couldn't resist.
Lightly throwing the DVD, that the 'Boss' had only just given him, onto the bedside table,  Glen flopped onto his bed, not even bothering to take off his clothes....and in moments he was fast asleep.
To begin with it was a deep dreamless sleep.
Then the dreams came......
At first vague and nebulous ...... - but gradually taking on a greater clarity and reality.
The dream images involved what would be described by the 'Boss' - who had studied such matters - as Anasazi pueblos (village in Spanish) - but oddly Glen had no such knowledge of such things.
Glen's Dream - the Anasazi Pueblo
Glen's Dream - Inside the Pueblo
The Anasazi or Ancestral Puebloans were an ancient Native American culture that spanned the present-day Four Corners region of the United States, comprising southeastern Utah, northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, and southwestern Colorado. The Anasazi are believed to have developed, at least in part, from the Oshara Tradition, who developed from the Picosa culture. They lived in a range of structures that included family pit houses, larger structures to house clans, grand pueblos, and cliff-sited dwellings for defense. The Anasazi possessed a complex network that stretched across the Colorado Plateau linking hundreds of communities and population centers. They held a distinct knowledge of celestial sciences that found form in their architecture. The 'kiva', a congregational space that was used chiefly for ceremonial purposes, was an integral part of this ancient people's community structure.
Glen had been brought up, not in the South West of the USA - home of the now lost Anasazi, but in the North East, and he had almost no knowledge of native American culture.
In his dream he saw visions of vast desert landscapes - and later found himself wandering in strange stone building which seemed to be located, to some extent underground.
Glen's Dream - Alien in the Pueblo
Eventually, as he wandered, in his dream, through these seemingly endless subterranean chambers, he came upon a gaunt Grey figure.
Although his previous experiences of 'aliens' had all been wiped from his mind - both in the UFO, and later by Faunus, he had been given sufficient cultural background knowledge to know, vaguely, that this being was probably not human, and possibly extraterrestrial - not that, as far as he knew, there was any evidence that extraterrestrials really existed.
When Glen noticed the ET's eyes, however, the dream scene changed abruptly, and he found himself in a wooded landscape which was dominated by a tall, vast butte. (an isolated hill or mountain with steep or precipitous sides usually having a smaller summit area than a mesa).
Glen' s Dream - The Tall, Vast Butte,
Although this landmark was very well known in American popular culture, Glen, with his previous limited interests, (as determined by Faunus), had never before seen this particular unusual butte - but the image frightened, and yet also fascinated him.
As he lay on top of his bed - he had been so tired that he hadn't even pulled down the bedclothes and properly got into the bed - Glen tossed and turned, breathing hard and sweating, and feeling almost as if he was having a nightmare, as the image of the strange butte burned itself into his memory.
Eventually the picture had been indelibly imprinted on his mind, and the 'dream images' began to fade, and then Glen fell into a relaxing, dreamless sleep.
And for the remainder of the night Glen lay motionless on his bed, slowly and deeply breathing, and calmly waiting for the morning light.

Glen was new to the strange world of Faunus and the 'Penthouse Gang' - but Jim and Ethan had a very long history - although they rarely spoke of it.
Gnæus Octavian Gracchus
In a far distant world, and a far distant time Jim and Ethan met as 'slave-boys' - owned by the fabulously wealthy 'Gnæus Octavian Gracchus' (who bore an uncanny resemblance to the 'Boss').
For most of the time the boys lived in the huge, lavish and luxurious 'Villa Auream' (the Golden Villa'), at Baiae, situated on the Gulf of Napoli.
Petronius - 'Magistri Harena'
Little came of their friendship as 'Marcus' (as Jim was then known) became involved with the handsome slave 'Petronius' (Zac ?) - who was the 'Magistri Harena', - 'Master of the Arena' - the senior slave who organized all the events in Gracchus private Amphitheater.
Later, 'Marcus' was adopted by his Master, and on the Master's death 'Marcus' became 'Dominus' - Master in his own turn.
At that point Ethan - as he is now known, became one of Marcus' many slaves - but in his case he was the favorite - and an intense relationship developed between them.
Fate, however, played a cruel trick on both of them, and 'exiled' them to a strange world, and a strange time.
They both found it difficult to renew their previous relationship in such new and difficult circumstances - but in Amarillo things seem to have changed.
Brody
Max
Perhaps it was loneliness - or something else - but by the time they reached Texas, Ethan had got over Brody, and Jim had got over Max - and at that point the two old friends were once again brought together - despite the intervening vast tracts of time, and many the miles - and so 'true love triumphed once again.'
While Glen was 'enmeshed' in his disturbing dream - Ethan and Jim watched the 'Platinum Edition DVD' of Brody's First Fight.
This was the first fight at the California Combat Club that Jim had seen.
Ethan, on the other hand, had actually been present at the fight that was recorded on the DVD.
Glaux among the Lights
At one point, early on in the DVD, there was a 'long shot' of the interior of the auditorium where the fight was being staged.
Jim stared intently at the screen.
"Is that a small bird up there among the lights over the ring ?", Jim asked, obviously surprised.
Ethan smiled.
"Right on Jim.....that's our Glaux.", Etan replied, delighted that Jim had noticed.
'Final Frontier Space Museum'
Now if you, dear reader, recall,  at the time of the fight, Jim had been a New Mexico with the 'Boss', Glen (as he then was - the nephew of the 'Boss'), and Max - later visiting the 'Final Frontier Space Museum'.
Jim had seen some of the fight, but only on a rough 'streamed' version, sent direct from the Combat Club's CCTV system.
Also, neither the 'Boss', Faunus or Ethan had ever had told Jim what had actually happened regarding the incident involving Glaux at the California Combat Club, and it was for that reason that Jim was surprised to see Glaux among the lights.
And so Ethan put the video on 'pause', and took great pleasure in describing his part in the 'capture' of Brandt and Maria - and the subsequent fates of those two annoying characters.
Maria
'Sigi'
So please note that Jim was only slightly aware of the transformation, undertaken by Faunus, of Brandt into Sigi, and which Faunus had only briefly mentioned, (but more of Sigi later).
The capture of Brandt and Maria, of course, was the 'event' that allowed Ethan to boast of his macho prowess in security to the 'new Glen' during their initial conversations.
Having commented on Glaux, Jim, who had not actually seen the fight except on the CCTV download, insisted on continuing to watch the DVD.
With repeated mumblings of 'wow' and 'shit', Ethan definitely got into the action right up until the end, where Brody, minus his tiny thong, lay naked and obviously 'horny' on the canvass, admitting defeat to the deferential applause of the Club Members.
"Quite a fight, eh, Jim ?", Ethan said, as the image of Brody slowly faded from the screen.
"Yes....very good.", Jim replied thoughtfully.
Ethan switched off the DVD player and the flat-screen.
"Well, I need to have a shower before I go to bed...."Jim said.
Teddy Switches Off
Ethan looked up....wondering.
"You mean ?",Ethan said uncertainly.
"Yes...why not ?", Jim replied.
"What about Teddy ?", Ethan asked.
"Don't worry about me, boys...", Teddy said, as he crossed the room, opened the wardrobe door, and sat himself down among the hanging trousers and jackets.
Amarillo in the Early Hours
"I'll just switch myself off....so you won't even have to worry about me 'eavesdropping'.
And with that, he closed the wardrobe door.
And Jim and Ethan smiled, and headed for the shower, leaving  a trail of discarded clothes.
It was late, but Ethan and Jim didn't get to sleep until early the early hours of the morning.
There was much 'catching up' to do............
